Reading notes & corrections

Follow the evidence. Check the calculation.

About sending a correction

There is no public email address or message form at present. This page explains how to check what you are reading; it does not accept submissions.

Checking something in the story

Start with the reading note attached to the relevant scene. It explains qualifications around the historical account or the assumptions behind a calculation. An illustration is an artistic reconstruction, while a dated account describes what its author recorded; neither should be read as evidence for every detail of a scene.

For a possible correction, keep the scene title, the sentence in question and the original publication details together. A page number and publication date help distinguish a contemporary record from a later retelling. You can read more about this approach on our About page.

Checking a practice result

Use “Explore a particular result” at the practice table to choose the number you want to examine. Read the receipt one position at a time: staked is the amount risked, returned includes any winning stake, and net is returned minus staked. The last row adds every position in the round.

A chip marked 5 represents five units. An overlapping sector can pay more than one bet on the same number. The zero-rule experiment has separate rules, so its results can differ from the ordinary practice table.
